Murray 3.5 HP Classic Cut 20 inch Lawn Mower

by Gloria
(KY, USA)

I purchased this lawn mower at Wal-Mart and so far I have been happy with it. It's just a basic, no frills lawn mower. You put gas in the tank, prime it, and then pull to start. Nothing more to it. It comes with a 3.5 HP Briggs and Stratton engine. I've always had good luck with Briggs and Stratton engines and this one has proved to be very reliable.

It's a 20 inch size lawn mower, and you can lower or raise the blade to adjust the how short the grass needs to be cut. You can also adjust the wheels on the lawn mower, if you want the entire body of the machine to higher or lower from the ground.

The only small issue I have had with this lawn mower is that it will bog down and occasionally quit running if you try to mow grass that is too high or too wet. It seems that the grass just clumps up on the blades rather than spitting out the sides. When this happens, I have to shake the lawn mower up and down and that usually frees up the grass clumps. If that doesn't work, I have to turn off the lawn mower and carefully move the clumps with my hands.

Other than routine maintenance, I haven't had to do any repairs on this lawn mower.

All in all, it's a good lawn mower and I'm satisfied with it. I would recommend this lawn mower to any friend that wanted a reliable, no frills lawn mower at a reasonable price.

Ordering Carb parts
by: Timothy

If you need to order carb parts go to briggs and stratton website.
The website contains most operating manuals and also parts manuals for the engines.
You will need the engine codes numbers when ordering.
Those numbers are located on the pull rope housing front side.
I would also replace the govorner springs also when doing a carb rebuild since they will more then likely break when removing from the lawn mower.
The briggs and stratton web site seems a little hard to navigate thru but as soon as you get to learn it it is very helpful.
The carb kit will cost about$8-$12 depending on model and the govornor springs about $2-$4.
Rebuild time about 1/2 hour to an 1 hour.
Local Lawn Mower shops will charge a arm and leg and you may wait a month or longer if ordering parts thru them.

Murray that runs forever
by: Anonymous

I bought my Murray in 1984 in Junction City, Kansns, and it has served me faithfully ever since. The only break came during a three storage while I was overseas. It still has the original deck, handle, and engine, a 3.5hp Briggs & Stratton. It is now surging and I'm almost certain the problem is the diaphragm. Can someone point me to the correct carb rebuild kit, or just the diaphragm so I can get her running well? This machine is the best $90.00 I ever spent.

Hard starting/cutting off.
by: Timothy Wright

If you have problems with the fuel system then its not too much a hard fix. Here is a list of easy fixes for the fuel system. You can obtain the parts list at B&S website.
1: Hole in primer bulb/replace
2: Old gasket/diapragm are no longer good/Replace. Note, diapragm goes next to fuel tank, then gasket then carb
3: Float bowl needle and gasket o-ring are gummed up/ replace
4: Bad fuel/ drain and replace with new. Drain old gas at end of grass season or add stabilizer during off season.
Carb kits comes with everything except for primer bulb and fuel stabilizer.
5: bad fuel line/ replace with new line.
Remember to clean carb good and float bowl before replacing parts.

Re: Stop Working

For the person who posted that their mower will start up, then immediately die out, try cleaning the float bowl that is located underneath the carb. Make sure you clamp the fuel line before removing the bowl. My friend had the same problem and asked me to look at it, and that is what I did. It seems to be working fine now.

Great little Mower - very, very Senior friendly
by: Mike Cotton

Have operated this for 5 years now - only problem
is Primer bulb split - using masking tape until this part located - Model 20112X92C

When fininshed or taking a break time - remove clumping carefully ... Do not tip mower too much -
***********************************************
Now also using a 22inch Model 221110X92A [neighbor's]as doing both yards.

Always reliable Murray*/Briggs & Stratton*
pairing makes the 'as long as I am physically able to do at 70+' mowing still a pleasure.

When one gets tired of mowing often - just remember the long/cold/nasty winter of 2009
even in VA.

Murray 20 inch 3.5 HP
by: Mike

Good little mower - under a $100 WAL-Mart 2005 [5 yrs ago] Have mowed 2 yards - front and back for past 4 yrs and no problems -

When U are having trouble priming - check for a 'split' in the Primer bulb - even a tiny one causing air hole can make it an aggravation - I now push this w/nuckle - and also use masking tape and worked good - BUT need primer bulb so writing Briggs & Stratton.

It does clog up with wetter/thicker grass - but a hosing off after it cools down - and reaching under to free this is easy enuff to do for a clean up.

Now have neighbors 4.0 B&S - Murray [only used part one season - 2006] over here and the starter pull won't release - off to web srch for solving this -

Senior Citizen friendly mower for sure - even on slopes - all yards done in just 3 hrs [w/breaks]
