Planting Bulbs

by Jen
(NY)

I have tried, over the past few years, planting plants in several different ways. I have tried transplated after they were fulling grown, tried planting bulbs, and seeds.

I would have to say that the Bulbs are my favorite. Some of the most beautiful plants come from bulbs. Also, once they come up they come quite fast, so you have a sense of instant gratification.

So, plant bulbs because they are very easy. The most important thing is to note the planting depth and stick to it!

Thank you
by: Erica

I have never planted bulbs due to not knowing how to do it. I have always planted seeds because I knew how to do it. After reading this, I feel that maybe I should reconsider the whole seed thing and try planting bulbs, I didn't realize that bulbs grow faster than seeds and it sounds like you can really have some beautiful plants and flowers with bulbs. Thank you!

Squirrel-proof bulbs
by: Nan

My greatest chance for successfully planting tulip bulbs is to shake them in a bag with Gold Bond Medicated Powder. The squirrels do not like it.

Another alternative for spring blooms is to plant daffodils as the squirrels will not touch them. You'll have many spring seasons of blooms.

Bulbs are easiest

I agree with planting bulbs. Early on I made the mistake of planting them upside down. After I figured that one out, it is the quickest way to see results in my garden.

Always start your bulbs in a planter first
by: Anonymous

I find that I have the best luck when I plant my bulbs in a planter for the first year instead of directly in the ground. After they have bloomed, I replant them directly in the soil and have had beautiful tulips and calla lillies by doing this.

During monsoons the bulbs should be dried and kept in sand to be planted in the next season

Re-plant the bulbs every couple of years
by: Anonymous

Bulbs dig deeper in the soil, so they need to be dug out and re-planted. Also, separate and plant the little bulblets for even more flowers.
