Providing quality and powerful solution
for the garden

Black & Decker is one of the most recognized names in appliances, tools, and outdoor equipment. It’s not wonder that they would be one of the names many people would consider when considering the purchase of lawn care tools, including mowers.

Below is some valuable information about the company and its products that might help you make this important buying decision for yourself.

The History of Black & Decker

Like so many of the largest corporations, Black & Decker had a humble beginning. Back in 1910, two men – S. Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker – decided to set out on their own and become successful entrepreneurs.

With an investment of only $1,200, they purchase a machine shop in Maryland and began developing products, such as a machine that was used for candy-dipping.

For the first few years, the business trotted along. Then in 1914, the two young men developed a product that would become the backbone of the company: the electric drill.

It was in this year that they patented the idea which included a regular drill modified with a trigger switch and a pistol grip. Just two years later, this portable drill had been released into the industry and revolutionized it.

Together Black & Decker, as the company eventually became named, created the power tool industry which is one of the most lucrative segments even today.

After that initial success, they continued to build the company. They open a factory near Baltimore, listed the company on the Baltimore stock exchange, began pursuing foreign sales markets, and started purchasing other tool companies. All of this happened by 1928 – just 14 years after they started the business.

In the mid-1940’s, the company made another revolutionary decision. They had discovered that many employees were “borrowing” the drills in order to do work on their own homes.

As a result, they started a line of tools specifically for do-it-yourself home owners who wanted to handle their own renovations. Today, the DIY movement is huge all across the United States.

Another significant change came about in the mid-1950’s when Black & Decker first took an interest in outdoor equipment by releasing electric edgers and trimmers.

They followed this innovation with a wealth of others and more financially sound acquisitions, including GE’s small appliance line to the release of the SnakeLight, which became one of the company’s most popular products.

Today, the company is one of the most successful and long-lived in its field and is a global powerhouse in the industry. With more than 27,000 employees and annual revenue of $6.5 billion, the company has come a long since it was founded nearly a century ago.

Black & Decker Electric Mowers

If you’re looking for something traditional that can do a good job on your lawn at a reasonable price then Black & Decker’s line of electric mowers may be exactly what you had in mind. Below are a few examples of the models available currently.

The 18 inch Electric Lawnhog is a great example. For one, the mower was built so that anyone can use it easily. Because it’s electric, that means no user will ever have to struggle getting the mower started.

You just plug it into your outdoor outlet and mow away. Plus, the mower can create mulch or bad the lawn trimmings (bag is optional) which is nice.

There’s also an easy way to adjust the handle so people of any height can be comfortable using the mower without having to bend over and strain their backs.

Furthermore, the mower has a single lever that can adjust the height of all the wheels simultaneously so you can make sure to get the best cut for your lawn possible. Three versions of the Lawnhog are currently available from the company.

Another option is the 18 inch Electric Mulching Mower (which is also sold without the mulching option). This unit is even more lightweight than the Lawnhog so it can be an ideal choice for almost anyone in the family to use in order to keep the lawn looking spectacular.

It’s also very easy to maneuver so you won’t have to worry about struggling around obstacles in the yard. Like the Lawnhog, you can adjust the height of the wheels with a single lever and because it is also electric you won’t have to worry about the high price of gas to run your mower.

All of the electric mowers do have one drawback: they need to be within about 100 feet of the nearest electrical outlet. For some yards, that’s a great length. For others, that might be a challenge and that’s one reason why Black & Decker introduced a new product.

Black & Decker Cordless Mower

With the release of this cordless mower, Black & Decker effectively eliminated both the problems associated with gas-powered and electric-powered mowers.

You don’t have to worry about the problems of starting a gas engine or the dangers of carting gas back to your home or of maintaining those engines. Plus, you never have to feel tethered to a cord again.

Among all of its benefits, the cordless mower is also Energy Star compliant which means charging its 24 volt sealed lead acid battery will cost you less than running a traditional electric mower. If you’re worried about the run-time of the battery, don’t be.

You can cut up to 1/3 acre on a single battery charge in most cases. Plus, the charge time is reasonable. Within four hours, more than two-thirds of the battery can be charged. A full charge takes about 10 hours.

Like the other Black & Decker models, this one also includes one-touch height adjustment for all of the wheels and one start ignition.

Plus, the handle conveniently folds over so you can store it more easily without having to take up so much room. The mower is also protected by a lifetime warranty which means you won’t have to worry about any problems with it now or in the future.
